PRESTWICH PUB MAKES MANCHESTER HISTORY WITH FESTIVE FIRST: AN ICE RINK FOR CHRISTMAS
A popular Prestwich pub is skating into Manchester history as the first pub to host its very own Christmas ice rink.
The Woodthorpe, a well-loved venue owned by the Joseph Holt brewery, will transform its grounds into a pop-up skating rink on December 7 for what promises to be a magical winter wonderland experience, snow, or no snow. And to keep up the yuletide theme on what is being badged Festive Fun Day – two reindeers will also be at the pub (naturally with Santa in tow).
The idea to bring an ice rink to the historic pub came from landlady Gaynor Hindley, who wanted to bring something truly unique to the historic pub this holiday season .It’s a move, she says, which once again shows the versatility of pubs as community resources and places that are far more than somewhere to enjoy a drink or somewhere to eat.
“There doesn`t appear to be any record of an ice rink being set up in the grounds of a Manchester pub,” said Gaynor. “Our pubs have always been more than just places to eat and drink. They’re at the heart of their communities. Our pubs host so many different events and groups. So, when I started thinking about Christmas, I thought – what could be more festive than an ice rink?”
Unlike traditional rinks, this one is synthetic, meaning it doesn’t rely on cold weather or freezing temperatures to stay open — making it perfect for unpredictable British winters. The Festive Fun Day, which will run from 12 noon to 8pm, will also feature a Christmas market, with over 20 stalls offering seasonal treats, handmade gifts, jewellery, festive bakes – and even goodies for your dog.
Adds Liz Hardman, area manager of Joseph Holt: “Gaynor’s idea for an ice rink is a brilliant way to get into the Christmas spirit. We might not be in the Alps, but The Woodthorpe is bringing a slice of that magical atmosphere to Manchester. So be sure you get your skates on if you want to be part of the festive fun!”
