PUB RETURNS TO HISTORIC NAME AFTER £400,000 REFURBISHMENT
A popular Chester pub is going back to its roots following a £400 000 makeover – by switching to its historic name.
Following a top-to-toe refurbishment, The Mill will revert to its historic name, The Egerton Arms.
Once an 18th century coaching inn and meeting point, the pub was originally named after the Egerton family who were local landowners and lords of the manor. After being purchased by the Joseph Holt brewery in 2015, it was christened The Mill to mark the new chapter in its ownership.
However, now, after undergoing a complete revamp, brewery bosses decided it was time to take the pub back to its previous title. Not least to complement the traditional styling of the refurbishment which includes log burners, wood panelling, and banquette seating. There’s also a new heated pergola as part of a covered area outside the pub as well as a new private dining room.
Said Sean Parker, area manager at Joseph Holt: “Over the years many customers have casually mentioned that they’d like to see the pub go back to its original name of The Egerton Arms. So when we started the refurbishment characterised by traditional features and fittings, we felt the time was right to make the change back. As the classic community-pub restyling makes the name particularly fitting.”
The Joseph Holt brewery, which was established in 1849, has been headquartered at its Cheetham Hill premises in Manchester since 1860. The company, which was set up by weaver’s son Joseph Holt, and which has been in the same family for six generations, runs 126 pubs across the North West. The Egerton Arms is planned to reopen next month.
