Joseph Holt

From our earliest days, we have always had a strong link with local charities. It must have been close to Joseph's heart to look out for those in need of a helping hand.

We are extremely proud to have a very long relationship with Manchester's world-famous Christie Hospital.

It was back in 1914 that Sir Edward Holt donated the first £20,000 to help fund a new laboratory studying the use of radium to treat cancer. That commitment continued for 100 years as 2014 saw our Centenary Appeal for the Christie where we asked our pubs, staff and customers to help us raise £300,000. From the great support, we exceeded that target and achieved a staggering £402,000 when doubled by the Edward Holt Trust and Peter Kershaw Trust who has given enormous support for our appeal.

This year, we are proud to announce our support for Maggie's Charity who provides practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. The Manchester Centre needs over £1 million in donations each year to continue to provide its services which are all given completely free of charge to those in need of a safe haven to talk, managing stress, learning more about cancer treatment and eating well. There are plenty of other services that the charity offers which can be found here.  As the only company in the UK to have won both the British Beer and Pub Association's, Heart of the Community Award and the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group's, National Pub Aid Award. Joseph Holt is thrilled that our work with Maggie’s Manchester is continuing our tradition of working with the local community.

Our support continues as Joseph Holt has pledged to raise £50,000 for the charity. So please join the Joseph Holt Maggie's Appeal. You can make a donation by visiting and help make a difference to many lives.
