CHORLTON’S HISTORIC HORSE AND JOCKEY REOPENS AS THE AREA’S FIRST-EVER GASTROPUB
After an extensive refurbishment, one of Chorlton’s most iconic venues is now ready to reopen as the area’s first-ever gastropub.
Under the visionary stewardship of Neil Burke and executive chef Ben Chaplin, the team behind acclaimed Salford pub The Black Friar, the Horse & Jockey on the edge of Chorlton Green is set to become a landmark foodie destination.
Guests can expect an ever-changing menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with a mix of pub classics, premium à la carte dishes, weekly specials, and a modern take on The Black Friar’s renowned Sunday roasts.
Neil and Ben reopened The Black Friar in 2021 following a £1.4 million restoration, quickly establishing it as one of the region’s most celebrated food and drink venues.
Historic family brewer Joseph Holt, which recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, has owned the Horse and Jockey since 2012 but handed over operations to Neil and Ben who are taking the pub in a bold new direction.
Neil Burke said:
“After months of hard work, we’re thrilled to reopen the Horse and Jockey. It’s exciting to bring a fresh, modern approach to this beloved pub while keeping it deeply rooted in the Chorlton community.”
The bar will continue to serve Joseph Holt’s award-winning ales, complemented by a curated wine list designed for food pairing, new cocktails, and upgraded bar snacks.
Both The Black Friar and Joseph Holt teams share a deep respect for heritage, and the pub’s redesign reflects the historic status of the 500-year-old building. Original features have been highlighted, with stripped-back decor, heritage colours, and cosy furnishings creating a contemporary yet characterful interior.
Richard Kershaw, CEO of Joseph Holt, adds:
“After months of hard work, Neil and Ben are bringing their special vision for the Horse and Jockey to life. It promises to be an exciting food and drink destination, offering a true gastropub experience for all who visit.”
