White Lion

The White Lion in Westhoughton is a grade-II listed building spanning over 200 years old and was originally used as Westhoughton's post office. Situated in the town centre of what was a small village, that has now developed into a bustling little town. The pub is noted as a historical landmark, and has been licensed since the early 19th century and continues to serve great beers by Joseph Holt Brewery today.

A plaque was erected on the pub in 2012 to mark the bi-centenary of the burning of the mill by the Luddites in 1812 - the crime was plotted in the pub and the straw from the stables was used to start the fire. Michael Portillo visited the pub that year, as the pub was mentioned in a 19th century book about a British train journey. The White Lion was also listed as one of 21 most fascinating places in England by Historic England in 2016 for it's rich heritage and unaltered character since 1945.

The White Lion now focuses on sports events and is popular in the community for horse racing, football, darts and dominoes, where it has several teams flying the flag for the pub. The White Lion caters for all types of functions and parties. For more information, please contact us.
